Conization
Conization is a relatively minor surgical procedure that is used either as a diagnostic procedure or as part of the treatment of cervical precancerous lesions. During conization, damaged tissue is removed from the cervix.
The procedure is usually performed if pre-cancerous changes on the cervix have already been confirmed by histology or on the basis of abnormal cytology and colposcopy results. The conization technique chosen depends on whether the changes on the cervix are superficial or hidden in the cervix. Whether the woman is still planning pregnancy is also important information.
The procedure itself takes 5-10 minutes and is performed under brief general anaesthesia. After being placed in the “gynaecological position”, lying on her back with her legs on supports, medication is injected into the patient’s vein in her arm to put her to sleep and relax her for the duration of the procedure.
The procedure is usually performed using electric forceps, an electric needle, or scalpel, with the type of instrument used depending on the particular situation. During the conization, the doctor removes the part of the cervix where the lesions are located and performs what is known as an endocervical curettage , which involves scraping off part of the cervical canal lining. The material obtained is sent to the laboratory for detailed testing.

More information on the procedure
The procedure is usually performed under general anaesthesia.
Conization is performed almost always as day surgery - the patient rests in the recovery room after the procedure, and if there are no complications and her condition is stable, she goes home about 4 hours after the procedure. We recommend having someone accompany the patient after conization, and driving a motor vehicle for the rest of the day after the procedure is definitely not recommended.
After conization, it is necessary to rest for 5-7 days and especially to avoid vigorous physical activity and lifting heavy loads. The healing of the cervix is usually accompanied by mild spotting for 10-14 days, often with a slight discharge. Healing of the cervix depends on the extent of the procedure, and 2-4 weeks should be expected. Sexual intercourse and sports should be avoided for a month after the procedure, and the insertion of tampons or menstrual cups is not advised due to the risk of bleeding. Avoid swimming pools or other similar facilities (risk of infection).
The price range for the procedure is from CZK 14.000 to CZK 27.000, including anesthesia (or analgosedation) with post-procedure rest/hospitalization.
